For anyone suffering from long-term concussion side effects, there is not much that can be done to ease symptoms. But there may be a new type of treatment available soon. Researchers are beginning to study cannabis as a new type of concussion treatment.
Real-Time Diagnostic Ventures, Inc., based out of Boulder, Colorado is launching a study to investigate the effects of cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) for concussion victims based on anecdotal evidence. There is some evidence to suggest CBD could help restore neural functions after brain injury, so the study will track patients who have suffered a brain injury. The study will include 40 patients who are recovering from a brain injury. Half of the patients will be given CBD and the other half will be given placebos. The patients will then record symptoms and other subjective improvements including quality of sleep and overall wellbeing.
In addition to the study by Real-Team Diagnostic Ventures, researchers in Canada are also pursuing research into the effects of CBD as a treatment option for concussions. A study led by NEEKA Health Canada with the help of the National Hockey League Alumni Association and the Canopy Growth Corporation will use former hockey players in a double-blind study to see if CBD can help players suffering from the long-term effects of concussions.
Treatment Is Key To Preventing Damage
The immediate diagnosis and treatment of concussions is extremely important to mitigating long-term damage. After a concussion, the brain is extremely fragile and more injuries to the brain will compound the damage. When a brain cell dies, it releases a protein causing additional brain cell death. This protein can build up over time and cause degenerative neurological diseases.
The link between concussions and neurological diseases is no secret. Studies linking concussions to dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS among other conditions have existed for decades. Despite the abundant research establishing this link, sports organizations like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have consistently failed to take steps to protect players.
