What is the Celect® IVC Filter?

The Cook Celect® Inferior Vena Cava Filter (IVC Filter) is a device that was approved by the FDA in 2008 to help prevent blood clots from traveling into the heart and lungs in patients who have sustained serious injuries.

A defect in the design of the Celect® IVC Filter has led to a high risk of perforation. When the small legs of the device perforate the inferior vena cava, heart, or lungs, patients experience life-threatening complications, and require surgical removal of the device, if it can even be removed. Recent studies have shown that the Celect® IVC Filter from Cook has a high rate of perforation, at nearly 43% of all installations.

In addition to device perforation, the Celect® IVC Filter can fracture and migrate throughout the body, causing embolisms, strokes, and other serious complications.

How Does The Celect IVC Filter Work?

The Celect® IVC filter is a small cage-like device that is inserted into the inferior vena cava to catch blood clots as they travel upward from the legs, preventing them from entering the heart and lungs. These dangerous medical devices are designed to remain inside the body until the threat of traveling blood clots have passed, at which point they can, and should, be removed.

FDA Warning Regarding IVC Filters

In August 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety statement regarding IVC Filters conveying that the risk of device perforation greatly increased the longer the device stayed in the body and recommending they be removed after 39 days, but before 54 days.

The FDA’s warning came too late for thousands of patients who had already suffered adverse complications from the device. In June 2015, a study published in the Journal of Vascular Interventional Radiology confirmed the risk of device perforation.
