While the spring season might be short in Texas, the strength of storms surely makes up for its length. Much of North Texas has already suffered from multiple hail storms causing damage to thousands of properties. One recent storm produced quarter-sized hail that pelted the city of Kerrville.
Last month, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for San Antonio and the surrounding areas. The storms brought flash flooding that resulted in road closures and cancelled flights at the nearby airport. But the large amount of rainfall was nothing compared to the hail. The National Weather Service reported that hail was pelting the south and east sides of the city of Kerrville, Texas.
The hail was reported to be the size of a quarter; and, while that might not seem like much, property owners would beg to differ. Hail causes significant damage to all types of property. While most people understand how hail damages roofs, hail can also damage other significant building components, like HVACs, siding, and other parts of the roof structure.
While most commercial property owners feel comfortable by having insurance policies, the reality is that insurance companies often go to great lengths to avoid paying out on claims. Hail storms have a huge economic impact on insurance companies. One major storm could cost tens and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars in payouts. In order to minimize the amount of money they pay out in claims, insurance companies sometimes rely on bad faith tactics. While hail damage might seem obvious to property owners, insurance companies will often claim the damage has other causes. Insurers might claim the damage is “normal wear and tear” or that it was caused by inadequate property maintenance. Whatever excuse the insurance companies try to use, policyholders still have a right to pursue full coverage under their policies. When an insurance company undervalues or outright denies a valid property insurance damage claim, policyholders can file a lawsuit to recover their rightful compensation.
