Central Texas has seen its fair share of storms and storm damage over the past several months. Last October, an EF-3 tornado swept through the Dallas area, causing substantial damage to nearby homes and businesses. Just this past January multiple severe storms ravaged both the Bastrop and Fayette Counties, leaving many residents unsure of how to handle the ongoing damage in Central Texas.
Central Texas residents of both Bastrop and Fayette Counties are grappling after multiple recent storm systems brought hail, heavy rain, wind gusts up to 60 mph, and a tornado. A tornado touched down along highway 77 in Fayette County. Several trees were down and the highway was blocked by an 18-wheeler that had rolled over. Craig Moreau of the Fayette County Office of Emergency Management said multiple businesses were affected. Businesses in Bastrop County were also affected by the onslaught of storms in the area.
While large storm systems like these can cause massive property damage seemingly overnight, these events can also leave businesses vulnerable to lost revenue while repairs are completed.
Commercial Property Damage
Many different scenarios – including storms, flooding, fires, hail, and other natural disasters – pose a threat to businesses. Because these properties are investments, damage to commercial structures directly impacts the livelihood of the building owner and any tenants.
Insurance policyholders hope that when a storm or natural disaster damages their property, their insurer will cover the damages sustained in a timely manner. Unfortunately, however, this isn’t always the case; and, even when they do accept coverage, insurance companies often significantly underestimate the extent of loss and/or misrepresent the cause of the loss.
Though insurance adjusters claim to be objective parties providing unbiased damage assessments, in reality many adjusters earn a great deal of income from insurance companies themselves. This results in a built-in bias towards denying or undervaluing property damage claims.
