About Lipitor and Diabetes Lawsuits
The attorneys at Raizner Slania have extensive experience with personal injury cases arising from pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices. Our firm’s lawyers have worked on pharmaceutical injury cases such as Pradaxa and Mirena IUD; both products marketed recklessly to the general public without proper warning of the potential risk of life-threatening injuries and/or death. Lipitor is no different. Women should have been warned of the potential risk of developing type 2 diabetes and the resulting health risks. Raizner Slania can help if you or a loved one has developed type 2 diabetes as a result of taking Lipitor. Contact us today.
The Undisclosed Dangers of Lipitor
Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a cholesterol lowering medication that diminishes the levels of “bad” cholesterol while increasing the levels of “good” cholesterol. Lipitor is used to help reduce conditions such as risk of stroke, heart attack, and coronary heart disease.
Yet, with a drug created partially for helping reduce the risk of health complications, the drug ironically creates problems with diabetes in postmenopausal women. A University of Massachusetts Medical School study revealed postmenopausal women taking the drug were linked to potentially developing a Lipitor side effect of Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes Overview
Type 2 diabetes is often referred to as adult-onset diabetes. In adults, type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. It usually begins as insulin resistance, a disorder in which the cells do not use insulin properly. As the need for insulin rises, the pancreas gradually loses its ability to produce it.
Symptoms include:
Lack of Warnings
Pfizer’s patent for Lipitor expired in December of 2011. The label was changed on February 26, 2012 to reflect the FDA’s request that all statins include new information concerning statins and increased blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin HbA1c levels. The consequences of the lack of labeling by Pfizer have proven to be extremely detrimental to postmenopausal women.
Criticism of Pfizer’s Marketing of Lipitor
Overzealous marketing is a common problem within the medical and pharmaceutical industries. Results are overpromised and risks minimized or not revealed. Lipitor’s studies were inadequate due to the lack of information provided to understand how the drug affects the different genders. Women were not provided adequate information to make an informed decision concerning the drug and its risks. The development of type 2 diabetes is a serious, life-long problem these women were unaware Lipitor was linked to. The attorneys of Raizner Slania have experience fighting pharmaceutical companies who place the public at unnecessary risk. If you or a loved one has developed type 2 diabetes after taking Lipitor, please call the lawyers at Raizner Slania today.
Pfizer – Pharmaceutical Giant Under Scrutiny for Lipitor Dangers
Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and a repeat offender of improper marketing schemes. Pfizer has settled four similar cases with the US Department of Justice in the past ten years, including legal violations surrounding the company’s marketing of Bextra, lawsuits alleging violations of racketeering statutes, and claims of inflated drug costs by the State of New York. Lipitor is marketed by Pfizer and is now under scrutiny for dangerous side effects not identified to the general public.
Lipitor’s Lack of Diverse Studies
Lipitor is the best selling drug in pharmaceutical history. The drug was approved in 1996 and has grossed in excess of $125 billion. Its primary use is the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Although the marketing portrays a well-researched drug, the studies surrounding Lipitor were based on the effects on men only. Due to hormonal differences between men and women, they experience different side effects from the drug. In addition, the makers of Lipitor have not disclosed adequate information on the potentially life changing side effects of the drug.
The FDA released a statement in February 2012 announcing that new warning labels would be added to inform consumers of the serious risks of diabetes when taking Lipitor; however, Pfizer, the manufacturer of Lipitor, never took the initiative to warn their customers of the dangerous side effects of the drug. Journal of American Medical Association’s Internal Medicine released a seven-year study in 2011which revealed women in the risk group are at a 50 percent higher chance of developing the disease than those who were not. The study also cited the absence of postmenopausal women in the earlier studies.
